Hello Foswiki Community, FoswikiBeta2-232x300.jpeg

We are very pleased to announce that after a 2-month "sprint" by a team of dedicated developers and translators. Foswiki Release 1.2.0 Beta 2 is ready for testing. The work on Beta 2 tackled a very long-standing issue that has been deferred repeatedly from before Foswiki's inception. The Foswiki core has been converted to unicode / ut-8 encoding. This has some immediate and very significant benefits:
  • Many deferred tasks related to corrupted characters have been resolved.
  • Sites that chose to convert to utf-8 encoding in the stored topics have full access to the unicode character set in topic contents and names.
  • Internationalization "just works".
Although Foswiki now works best with utf-8 encoded topics, you can still chose to use traditional encodings, such as iso-8859-1. Encoding/decoding is now done "at the edge" in the Foswiki store when topics are read and written. Extensions that use the Foswiki APIs should not require changes. Extensions that work with the external world will require some changes to be compatible with Foswiki 1.2.

A number of other issues identified during Beta 1 were also addressed. You can see the complete release notes at  http://foswiki.org/System/ReleaseNotes01x02. Overall 480+ checkins were made after the Beta 1 release.

Unless new major issues are reported, we expect that the next build will the release candidate. We are targeting building 1.2.0-RC1 on June 29th, and if all goes well, 1.2.0 will be released on 4 July 2015.

The download links for Beta 2 can be found on  http://foswiki.org/Download/FoswikiRelease01x02x00Beta2.

Be sure to carefully review the release notes and installation instructions. A lot of significant changes have been made, including a very different installation process.

If you encounter issues, please report new issues at  http://foswiki.org/Tasks, and you can contact the developers for support on http://irclogs.foswiki.org/, or on foswiki-discuss@lists.sourceforge.net.

And as mentioned below, we need help in translation of Foswiki. If you or your colleagues can help, please contact  foswiki-translations@lists.sourceforge.net.

Foswiki Camp 2015

25 Feb 2015 | Julian Levens | Development, Event
FoswikisLatest 15 medium.jpeg

This will be held again in Amsterdam from Wed 25th - Fri 27th March.

This is a great opportunity to meet the faces behind the WikiNames and IRC nicknames of the project: http://www.foswiki.org.

It's also a great time to accelerate Foswiki development and indeed accelerate your own knowledge of how to be involved in developing and contributing to Foswiki and the Foswiki community.

See http://foswiki.org/Community/FoswikiCamp2015 for details - this includes:
  • Registration
  • How to get there
  • Accommodation
Please get involved now with ideas for the Camp here: http://foswiki.org/Community/FoswikiCamp2015Discussion

This year's assembly will take place by IRC using channel #foswiki-association on Friday 20th March 2015 at 1300Z UTC.

Please come along and be a part of this important community event.

See http://foswiki.org/Community/AgendaSixthGeneralAssembly" for further details and ways to get involved before the event.

The Foswiki Association is pleased to announce its 3rd General Assembly and Birthday Celebration, 19th-20th November 2011, at CERN Geneva. This is a great opportunity to meet some of the faces behind the IRC handles, to talk about Foswiki, and an excuse to visit the lovely Geneva area.

All association members are very welcome to attend. We'd love to meet you in person, but if you can't make it physically we'll be setting up channels to help you join in virtually. If you're not a member of the Foswiki association yet, see http://foswiki.org/Community/CurrentFoswikiMembers - all are welcome.

We're also excited to be holding our first one-day FoswikiCamp on the 18th November 2011 at CERN Geneva (the day before the GA). The plan is to have one or more fun "sprints"to scratch some itches that have been bothering us. See The GA is open to all association members, and the camp is open to anyone. Due to access controls at CERN we need to know in advance if you are coming, so please add your name to the relevant lists in the Foswiki topics linked above.

(We might even have a Foswiki release 1.1.4 to celebrate too!)

Update: Every year on the General Assembly people have the opportunity to become a Foswiki Member. This is a great way to help Foswiki to grow and gives you the right to vote on any decisions to be made on a General Assembly as well. To apply for membership add yourself to http://foswiki.org/Community/CurrentFoswikiMembers#Membership_Applications and contact two of the current Foswiki Members to support your application.
